The self-iniatied project 'Invisible Debris' explores which images fit the phenomenon of digital waste. As a society we are digitizing at a rapid pace, but we are only limitedly aware of its physical impact. Much data remains unused, is waste, stored in data centers that use energy, water and cause emissions. How do we make this digital waste tangible and sensible within our field? Four promising strategies emerged from this study to help us manage these resources: (i) virtual compost, (ii) viral data, (iii) powertool leakage, and (iv) digital treasuring. Together, these can become pillars of a renewed digital design practice that pro-actively addresses digital waste. They challenge the assumption that digital storage is infinite and that more is always better.
